Sclerotherapy

sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a chemical solution (sclerosant) directly into the vein. This solution irritates the vein lining, causing it to swell, stick together, and eventually scar over. The treated vein then collapses and is absorbed by the body.

frequently asked questions

Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting an FDA-approved medication directly into the abnormal veins.  This medication causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue, causing skin discoloration, which typically fades over time. In many instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed.

Both varicose veins and spider veins may be treated. The procedure can also improve related symptoms such as aching, swelling, burning, and night cramps.

30-60 minutes

Walking is encouraged immediately after the procedure. Strenuous activity and prolonged sitting or standing should be avoided for a few days. Mild pain or cramping is common and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or ibuprofen. Compression garments should be worn as directed by the physician, usually for a couple of weeks.

Some veins may disappear completely, while others may only show improvement. Spider veins typically fade within a few weeks to a couple of months. Multiple treatments are often needed for optimal results, spaced a few weeks apart.

Most people with bothersome spider veins or varicose veins are good candidates. Pregnant or nursing women, those with skin infections or certain heart conditions, and those on anticoagulant therapy are generally not eligible.

Common side effects include bruising, itching, swelling, and skin discoloration around the injection site. These are usually mild and temporary, resolving within a few weeks. Rare but serious side effects, such as skin ulcers and blood clots, are possible but uncommon.

Sclerotherapy is generally considered safe, especially when performed by a qualified healthcare professional, but it does carry some potential risks and side effects.
